This week for LAE 4424 we had to read four multicultural books. For our literary analysis this week we had to work in groups to create a tableaux about one of the multicultural books we read. Our group chose The Chinese Mirror adapted from a Korean folktale by Mirra Ginsburg and Illustrated by Margot Zemach.
Summary of the story : A villager returns from a journey to China with a strange object ( a mirror) that he wants to keep to himself and hides in his trunk. But when his family finds the object they each have their own prospective of what they think he brought home. The mirror creates such an up roar that the family decides to destroy it, which ended their troubles.
The picture we captured is of the villager with his mirror by his trunk, his wife crying because she believes her husband has found a new wife, and the villager's mother believing that her son was more clever than to bring back an old woman.
(From left to right)
Husband's Mother: She is confused on why her son would choose to bring a wrinkled old crone, suggesting her son is not very clever.
The pretty young wife: She is crying and sobbing, upset because she believes her husband brought home a pretty young wife from China and keeps her hidden in the trunk.
Husband, who found the mirror: He is looking at his magical round shiny thing, keeping it to himself hiding it in the trunk.
Weekly Reflection
This week we read the McDaniel article about critical literacy which exploring the differences in literature that are differences that impact real life instead of ignoring them or acting as if they do not exist. This article talked about why it is important to paint over the pictures some stories try to portray such as stories of princess and princes that live happily ever after, sometimes that is not always the case. Multicultural books to job of showing the the differences or real life issues. Growing up I really did not like reading but as I became older I found books about my own more enjoyable for me to read or even books about the how my was treated by others. "To Kill A Mockingbird" is one of my favorite stories because you see it from a child's point of view and they don't even understand why this person is treated differently because they don't have the same color of skin. After talking about our diverse portrayals project I would like biracial families.
