This book informs readers about the travels nomads had when arriving into the Americas. Christopher Columbus did not discover America, he simply found new land and called it his own.
2. Hiawatha- By: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Pictures by: Susan Jeffers
This book goes over the journey Hiawatha the chief of the Mohawk people goes through growing up. The book covers oral traditions of American Indian culture.
3. Honest Abe By: Edith Kunhardt Paintings by: Malcah Zeldis
The book is about Abraham Lincoln life and the journey he took in becoming president.
4. Child of the Civil Rights Movement By Paula Young Shelton and Raul Colon
The book covers the events that took place during the Civil Rights Movement through the perspective of a young African- American young girl.
Theme: Teaching History
The Discovery of the Americas and Hiawatha can be read to the class during the month when Christopher Columbus day is held. Teachers can read the Hiawatha book first and then the book Discovery of the Americas and have students create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the different perspective of the two stories. Students will also write down what the two books had in common.
The book Honest Abe and Child of the Civil Rights Movement can be read during Black History Month. After reading the two books to the classroom the teacher will handout a Question and Thoughts Worksheet. Students will fill in the Worksheet with their questions and thoughts and share with a partner. After a student shares with their partner, they have to share with the rest of their peers that are in the same table. Teachers will call each group and each group will present a similar question that each group member had.
