Information books are books that readers can read to learn more about the outside world or a particular subject that interests them. Nonfiction books help readers boost their “vocabulary and literacy concepts” (pg. 277). It is crucial for teachers to have a wide range of variety of non fiction books to help students learn about historical events, activities, and the social realities. Teachers should then be very careful when choosing nonfiction books for their classroom library they have to make sure that the books are factual and accurate. Nonfiction books need to be accurate so no one is learning inaccurate information.
One the books i brought to class was Child of the Civil Rights Movement by Paula Young Shelton and Raul Colon. This book talk about the civil rights movement through the eye and perspective of a young African American girl. This is a great book for children because it takes such a profound time in American history and puts it in the perspective of a child that doesn't understand why she can't do what other children can do because of her skin color. It is a book that can open the students eyes of how the country use to be and why it is important to treat everyone the way they want to be treated no matter their skin color or the way the look.
